Their food of choice is the cellulose part of the wood which is found in walls, floors, dressers, tables, etc. Their damage is normally found on the first floor of the home and in the basement. One can find evidence of them in their tunnels and their swarming behavior.

Formosan Subterranean Termites

Formosan Subterranean Termites

The Formosan Subterranean Termite is generally found in the warmer southern areas of the United States in addition to Hawaii. Because of its ability to consume a vast amount of wood in a short amount of time, this type has earned the nickname “the super termite.” A healthy adult colony can eat up to a pound of wood a day. Also, the queen of the colony can lay up to 1300 eggs a day. Because of this, the Formosan Subterranean can cause the highest amount of property damage to all their species in the United States.

These pests don’t just stick to wood, either. They have been known to eat wood, plaster, plastic, and even metal. A tell-tale sign of a Formosan Subterranean infestation is in the bulging of your walls. This is caused as they not only eat the walls, but they create tunnels made of their saliva and feces. When you see this, bulging time is of the essence and you need to get a professional to come take care of your problem before the colony eats you out of house and home, literally!

Termite Control: Drywood Termites

Drywood Termites live in dry wood and therefore can be found in everything from wooden rocking chairs and bookshelves to hardwood flooring or walls. Of the hundreds of dry wood species, only a handful are found in the United States.

TermiteOne subspecies of the Drywood is the Powderpost termite which is commonly found in the southeastern and middle parts of North America. The common name for this type is the furniture termite because they will build their nests within the furniture. Western Drywood are another subspecies that mainly inhabit the western side of the United States.

Their colonies tend to be relatively small in comparison to subterranean. However, the danger lies in that there can be multiple colonies within a single dwelling and rather than living in tubes and huts, they live in the wood itself and will tunnel along the grain of the wood. Also, unlike subterranean, they do not require any contact with the soil to live.

Drywood termites begin by working in teams. A male and female pair will work their way into the wood chosen for the nest. The opening through which they enter the wood is sealed with a plug of brown cement-like material about 1/8-inch in diameter. They then excavate a chamber behind the plug where the queen lays the first eggs.

The Drywood can be found by their fecal pellets that are 6 sided and concave on each side. They will also leave behind a fine powdering of wood which resembles fine sawdust.
